About this program
To be awarded a Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) degree, one additional year of study is required following the successful completion of the Bachelor of Nursing.

Offered by Griffith University's School of Nursing and Midwifery, our Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) will give you an opportunity to undertake advanced study and supervised research work.
You'll complete coursework and a research preparation course in your first trimester and complete a dissertation in your second trimester.
Coursework
Through the 30-credit point coursework component of the Honours program, you'll gain an understanding of how to critically evaluate research. You'll also develop your knowledge of statistical analysis techniques as applied to scientific research and gain an awareness of how research proposals should be designed.
Dissertation
Through the 50-credit point dissertation component, you'll conduct research on a specific project and complete a seminar and dissertation describing the research in detail.

Attendance information
This program is offered on-campus full-time or part-time. Please note that not all courses are offered in on campus mode at all campuses. Coursework may take place on the Gold Coast, Logan, Nathan and South Bank campuses with some courses also available in off campus (online) mode. Students are required to check the Programs and Courses website to find out more information on where and when courses are offered.
Students may commence the program in either Trimester 1 (March) or Trimester 2 (July). Students will undertake coursework and a research preparation course 7001HSV Foundations of Research Inquiry in their first trimester and complete the dissertation in their second trimester.
Students who wish to complete the program part-time will be required to consult with the BN Honours Program Director to determine an appropriate program structure.
If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
This program consists of 30 credit points of coursework and a 50 credit point research thesis component.
Coursework
The coursework will provide critical evaluation of research and presentation, develop the student's knowledge and understanding of statistical analyses techniques as applied to scientific research and develop an awareness of research proposal design and background. Students are required to attend compulsory coursework sessions as stipulated in the University teaching timetable and in the course timetables provided by Course Convenors.
Dissertation
Students are required to find a suitable supervisor for their research project prior to submitting their application for admission into the program. Students who are unable to locate a suitable supervisor should discuss their proposed research project with the Program Director.
The final research component of the program will be a dissertation which will involve research on a specific project, a seminar and dissertation describing the research in detail.
Students enrolled in the dissertation component of this program will work under supervision and be required to meet regularly with their supervisor. It is recommended that students discuss the on-campus attendance requirements of the research project with their supervisor at the start of the dissertation.
Depending on the project, attendance at off-campus locations may also be required. Where a project requires on-campus work, students are required to undertake their research at an appropriate facility on the Gold Coast, Logan or Nathan campuses, or according to the directions of the supervisor and/or Program Director.

Workplace Health and Safety Training
Students are to discuss required workplace health and safety training with their supervisors prior to the commencement of 7001HSV Foundations of Research Inquiry. Students who fail to undertake the prescribed workplace health and safety training will not gain entry into laboratories.

As a graduate, you will be able to plan and conduct research in nursing and related health disciplines, and will be well-placed for positions in the private, not for profit, and public sectors.
You may find opportunities in hospitals, in the community, and in urban and rural settings. Nursing graduates are employed in a range of occupations and industries. As well as hospitals, medical centres, community health clinics and aged care centres, you'll be prepared for work in schools, the travel industry, with drug and alcohol service providers, in sporting clubs or in research organisations.
International students
An International student is one who is not:
- an Australian or New Zealand citizen or
- a Pacific Engagement visa holder or
- a person who has Australian permanent resident status.
Indicative annual tuition fee
The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters).

Tuition fees
- An International student pays tuition fees.
- Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date.
- The tuition fee for students who commence their program prior to 2014 is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student commenced the program.
- The tuition fee for students who commence their program from 2014 onwards is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled.

Changing programs
If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.
Permanent resident status
If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.
The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.
If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
