About this program
Medical scientists perform diagnostic tests of blood, tissues and other bodily fluids to help doctors diagnose diseases such as glandular fever, diabetes, swine flu and even cancer. Medical scientists can also recommend treatment options and help manage clinical trials.
In this degree, you will develop the knowledge and skills to work as a medical scientist. In your first year, you will take courses in chemistry, cell biology, anatomy and physiology. You will learn about the body's structure, how it functions under normal circumstances and general health challenges.
From your second year, you will start to focus on specialist courses in medical laboratory science and learn how the body functions under diseased conditions.
In your fourth year, you will gain more in-depth knowledge of medical laboratory science and undertake full-time clinical placements in each of the areas of medical science.
Honours is available through an additional year of study.

Attendance information
This program will be offered full-time and on-campus at the Gold Coast. The program is completed in eight trimesters.
Students commencing in this program from Trimester 2 are required to complete core courses in Trimester 3.
The Trimester 2 intake for this program will require students to undertake compulsory study in Trimester 3 in Year 1 of the program.

Work-integrated learning
The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science shares a common foundation first year with a number of other Health Group programs. Core courses in this program involve more than 400 hours of laboratory work (Work-integrated learning ( WiL)) plus approximately 560 hours Clinical Placement in fourth year. Laboratory work and research projects will provide you with a significant period of time in a professional workspace to develop technical knowledge and skills appropriate for work in research or commercial laboratories. Students will participate in the Health Foundation Year courses which include over 80 hours of laboratory work and computer laboratory work in 7 of the 8 core courses. The second year of the program includes over 120 hours of Work-integrated learning ( WiL) in laboratory environments. In third year, students are expected to complete more than 300 hours Work-integrated learning ( WiL). Fourth year includes 40 credit points of Practical Clinical Placement in Trimester 1. It is envisaged that this clinical placement experience will comprise 560 hours.

Indicative annual tuition fee

Changing programs
If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.
Permanent resident status
If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.
The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.
If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
