Understanding Asia (1008IBA)

This course will provide an accessible multi-disciplinary introduction to the study of the East and Southeast Asian region. The course will examine themes in the region's history, and its processes of social, cultural, political and economic change. The course will also analyse the region's international relations, and in particular its relations with Australia. These countries just to the North of Australia contain some of the most colourful and the complex societies in the world. These issues are introduced in a series of themes that are presented in six broad areas: Studying Asia; Tradition and Modernity in East and Southeast Asian Societies; History and Politics in East and South East Asia; Economic Growth and Economic Challenge; International Relations and their Impact on East and South East Asia; Australia and Asia.The course also encourages you to take an interest in the current affairs of the region.
