Introduction to Social Theory (1014HSV)

This course provides an introduction to the contemporary debates in the social sciences and their relevance to social interventions in the health and human services arena. The social sciences provide human services practitioners with theoretical and methodological frameworks for professional practice. Frameworks, informed by the discipline of sociology, connect important concepts such as class, race, sex and age to social inequalities. This course is intended to expose students to the wider social and cultural context in which health and human services operate, including an understanding of culture, globalisation, environmental sustainability and issues surrounding disadvantage. Incompatible: 1007HUM Social Sciences in Australia. Restriction: Students must have this course listed in their program to enrol. Psychology students can choose this option as a free-choice elective in their program. Students who do not have this listed in their program will need to seek permission to have it approved as an elective in their program. Restriction: The online offering of this course is available for HSV students only. Students outside HSV will not be permitted to complete the online option this includes Psychology students who can only complete the on-campus option. NOTE ONLINE OFFERING: Please be aware that online learning is different to learning on campus. Depending on the structure of the course, you may have access to the same content and resources as on campus students. You will not have separate tutorials or lecture slides as this content is already represented on your Learning@Griffith course site. Online learning requires that you self pace through the content, under weekly direction from your teaching staff, which means that you need to take responsibility for your learning in a different way.
