This course is a foundation course for development of an understanding of core concepts and basic competencies necessary for effective counselling practice, especially those essential to establish and maintain the client-practitioner relationship and support the therapeutic process. You will also be introduced to the foundations of developing an understanding of the client as a unique person, also termed 'case conceptualisation' and the concept of diversity. The skills you will learn include micro-skills such as listening, attending fully to the client, and creating a safe therapeutic relationship; self-and-other awareness; and self-reflection. Practical exercises allow you to integrate knowledge development with skills application. You will also be provided with opportunities to reflect on how counselling skills will fit within your future career and how you might prepare for further professional education in the field.
