Foundations of Law introduces key legal concepts and ways of understanding the law that are fundamental to the entire law program. Throughout the trimester, you will develop your knowledge of the key principles and institutions that underpin the operation of Australia's legal system, including the separation of powers (incorporating the differing roles of Parliament, the Executive and the Judiciary); and the rule of law. We examine the basis on which these principles and institutions were adopted in Australia, and the implications for recognition of the rights and legal systems of First Nations People. We introduce legal ethics and examine the roles played by lawyers in Australian society. We provide you with frameworks for effectively accessing state and national laws and conducting other forms of legal research. Building on that knowledge, we develop and apply key legal skills, including reading, analysing and summarising the essential features of cases and legislation, and interpreting statutes, collectively helping you to respond effectively to legal problems.
