Career Psychology and Counselling (2020PSY)

Careers are pervasive individual and social phenomena: everyone should have a career. Yet, the dramatic changes to the labour market over the past few decades, brought about by advances in technology, globalisation, and trade deregulation, have revolutionised the way that people work; and there are more changes ahead. You will (a) be introduced to the theories of career development and how they are applied across the lifespan, and (b) gain beginning practitioner skills, including how to conceptualise a career pathway, explore existing and developing barriers, undertake a career assessment and a mock career counselling session, and write a professional report on an individual client. The course is ideal for anyone who is planning a career working with people. Topics include the meaning of work, work in the 21st century, career theories, career assessment, and career counselling and interventions. Prerequisites: 1002PSY.
