This course will deal with contemporary issues and theory as they relate to the survival and retention of identity among indigenous people in the face of increasing pressure from the West and modern nation-states, particularly with regard to expanding resource demands from the industrial and post-industrial sectors. Case study materials are drawn from a range of societies, including those of Aboriginal Australia and the Pacific region, and address various development issues, including mining, tourism, conservation and climate change.
