The main purpose of this course is to enhance students' intercultural and communicative competencies by extending their intercultural and communicative experiences. A signature international experience provides the means by which to achieve this. 3356LHS is centred around a field trip of approximately 3 weeks to Peru, during which time students will collect and collate research information written, spoken, graphic/photographic from cultures other than their own. The field trip and its associated activities will provide students with extensive opportunities to reflect on cultural difference and similarity, and to consider salient cultural, social and political issues. Importantly, it will allow students to conduct a practical interrogation of 'culture' and 'tourism': how are these terms mobilised in the context of an international field trip, and what sociodiscursive work is done by ideas of 'touring cultures' and of 'cultures of touring'? There are no prerequisites for this course, which is open to all 2nd and 3rd year level Griffith students. Students enrolling in 3356LHS must have a strong interest in Spanish, pre-Hispanic and Hispanic cultures, and are expected to have as a minimum a basic 'social' proficiency equivalent to the B1 Threshold level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). A willingness to engage with languages other than Spanish and the visual language of photography is also required. NOTE: Students are required to contact the Course Convenor for permission to enrol. Attendance to all pre-departure lectures is a compulsory component of 3356LHS.
