Classical and Quantum Electrodynamics (6007ESC)

Advanced classical electromagnetism is incredibly useful. The course covers propagation of EM fields through conducting and non-conducting media, guided propagation in waveguides and applications including waveguides, transmission lines and optical fibre communication. Quantum electrodynamics is probably the most successful theory ever, in the range and precision of phenomena it can predict. Students will gain a basic understanding of the theory and its applications, be able to communicate this understanding, and to solve simple problems. Advanced topics may vary by offering. Pre-requisites: 2301NSC Electromagnetism & Optics or equivalent; 3301NSC Quantum Physics III or equivalent
