In this interdisciplinary and experimental course, students will explore the intersection of ecology, sensing, and the arts within the changing landscapes of the Anthropocene. Through seminars, field-based explorations, and analyses of case studies from visual, media and performing arts, students will encounter scientific concepts and techniques for investigating the sensory dynamics of more-than-human environments, and apply and integrate these into their own practice. This course builds foundational ecological knowledge that prepares students for an increasing number of professional opportunities for environmentally-aware practitioners in the arts. Topics include ecological immersion and observation, the science of sensory ecology, Umwelt theory and nonhuman perceptual worlds, Indigenous ecological content and practices, acoustic, visual and other sensory techniques for mapping landscapes, ecological storytelling, human impacts on sensory ecological dynamics, and the role of creative practices in 'making sense' of Anthropocene landscapes. Students will integrate scientific theories and approaches into their own practice to produce self-reflective and creative outputs. No prior knowledge is required.
