This course prepares students to conceptualize qualitative research in terms of research questions and design, methodology, data collection and qualitative analysis. In doing so, this course focuses on the issues, problems, and strategies related to 'small-N' qualitative research, for the most part setting aside the techniques of large-N statistical analysis, which are covered in 7011GBS. This course is divided into five main parts focusing on the following topics: (1) the goals, origins and contributions of qualitative research in the social sciences; (2) elements of research design; (3) sources of data and their collection; (4) analysis and interpretation of qualitative data, including theory generation; (5) representation and dissemination of qualitative research. Students will read and discuss scholarly texts that either demonstrate or critique core aspects of qualitative research, and actively engage in practice based and peer learning through activities and group discussion. Prior to enrolling in this course it is expected that you have nominated a supervisor for your dissertation and have discussed a topic of research with that Supervisor. Prerequisites: NIL Co-requisites: NIL Incompatibles: 7002GBS Advanced Research Methodologies.
