Machinery and Principles of Policymaking (7023GIR)

In this course you will examine the principle of responsible government and its implications for policy analysis, and the values and ethics of the policy sciences in a democracy. Using case studies, you will examine the actors and interests at play in policy decisions, and how they are managed with contemporary governance practices. You will learn about models of how public policy is made, and describe the role of the professional policy analyst in Australian government, drawing on insights from the policy studies literature, as well as from practitioner perspectives. The political ideas, principles and institutions that underpin Australian governance frameworks are also explored in this course. You will be able to identify the forces that have challenged these institutions and traditions and evaluate their contemporary role in shaping policy-making. You will demonstrate the capacity to think critically about issues and dilemmas in policy and analysis and effectively research, evaluate and communicate their arguments. The foundation in political governance this course provides will ensure you have a solid understanding of the policy making process and how it is influenced and governed.
