Australia in the Asian Century: Policy Challenges and Implications (7037GIR)

Many have traditionally regarded Australia as being on the periphery of the international system because of the country's physical distance from North America and Europe. However, the emergence of Asia as the world's economic powerhouse has underscored Australia's comparative geographical advantage of being situated close to key markets in the region. What are the key challenges facing Australian governments 'at all levels' in realising the full potential of this relative advantage? How do political and economic factors intersect to shape Australian policy? What are the implications for Australia in the longer term flowing from Asia's rapid rise? These questions will be addressed in depth in the course through a variety of learning methods, including seminars, role play, and assessment base on written work and class participation.
