First Peoples and Social Justice (Advanced) (7047HSV)

Engaging social justice and human rights perspectives, you will take a critical look at historical, political, institutional and social forces that have shaped welfare and health policies and practices for Australia's First Peoples. You'll analyse the implications of colonisation since British invasion and develop a clearer understanding of the identities, histories, experiences and needs of First peoples, whether they reside in urban, rural or remote areas. By becoming more aware of the attitudes, values, opinions and beliefs that underpin mainstream representation of contemporary First Peoples in Australia, you'll be better placed to identify the extensive and complex manifestation of systemic racisms, white supremacy, and privilege and deconstruct them. These things manifest in the treatment of First Peoples in the Australian criminal justice system, its health policies and in juvenile justice, among other areas. You'll have the ability to critically analyse and articulate the societal constructs, policies and practices that impact First peoples' social justice and human rights outcomes in Australia and apply an anti-colonial practice framework for working alongside the diverse peoples of First Nations of Australia. Pre-requisite : For undergraduate students: 80CP HSV courses or equivalent. This course is open to students who have it listed in their program which includes students enrolled in Primary Maternity Care Programs.
