Renewable Energy Systems (7405ENG)

This course begins with an overview of conventional energy supply systems and renewable energy resources including biomass, solar, wind, geothermal, wave, tidal and hydroelectricity. Following a brief review of some basic concepts in energy and power, energy systems analysis is introduced. The course then focuses on three major renewable energy resources: solar, wind and biomass. Other renewable energy resources and energy storage are then studied but in less detail. The final section of the course will consider some issues in energy policy, impacts of renewable energy systems and the commercialisation of renewable energy systems. Substantial use is made of spreadsheets and other computer programs for computations on renewable energy systems and the evaluation of energy resources. In addition to the material in the textbook and that presented in the formal lectures, students will have access to online reading lists and other resources such as mini-lectures, lecture notes, module notes, and tutorial captures and workshops videos. These online resources will enable some independent learning activities. Students are encouraged to participate in the collaborative session with the lecturer.
