In Year 3, Doctor of Medicine (MD) students enrol twice a year in a single course, Medicine 3, which consists of four themes: The Doctor and Patient; The Doctor and Knowledge of Health and Illness; The Doctor and Law, Ethics and Professional Practice; and The Doctor and Health in the Community. The students are placed with a designated zone for the entire year and rotate through six clinical blocks each of 7 weeks: Medicine, Aged/Cancer Care, Mental Health, Surgery, Women's Health, and Children's Health. The settings for learning experiences will vary from discipline to discipline but include ward rounds, out-patient clinics, procedural and specialist clinics, theatre sessions, multidisciplinary team meetings, liaison rounds, community clinics (both medical and nonmedical), and on-call with junior medical staff. There is an emphasis on learning in clinical and small group environments. A variety of delivery methods are used in relation to educational resources, including seminars, Case-Based Learning (CBL) tutorials with an online presentation system (OSCARS), online resources covering the common conditions, and relevant journal articles/guidelines linked to learning items on Learning@Griffith. Students will be assessed throughout the year with a variety of assessment types including oral and written presentation of cases (OSCARS), mini-clinical evaluation exercises (miniCEX), in-block training assessments, written assessments including assignments, competency-based clinical assessments, and an OSCE.
