Applied Migration Law and Practice (7134LAW)

This course is one of two final courses comprising the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice. The Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice is a prescribed academic qualification for registration as a migration agent in Australia. 7134LAW is a multi-faceted project-based course that provides students with the opportunity to integrate and consolidate the skills and knowledge that they have acquired in the previous six courses and the companion course 7234LAW. Students are immersed in a virtual office in which they have sole responsibility for managing client enquiries and running a client matter from initial client contact and file creation to file closure. In addition, students also have the opportunity to organise an optional external supervised work placement with a registered migration agent or migration lawyer. 7134LAW is the companion course to 7234LAW as it builds on skills and knowledge taught in 7234LAW that focus on professional ethics and establishing and managing a migration practice. Like the other companion courses in the Graduate Diploma Program, in 7134LAW, students learn and apply the practitioner skills they need to effectively integrate the legislative content they acquire in 7234LAW (and have acquired in the previous six courses). As such, in addition to the horizontal alignment between 7234LAW & 7134LAW, both courses are also aligned with all of the courses in the Program. The deliberate alignment and capstone nature of this course allows students to progress logically through the growing complexity of both legal and practitioner skills culminating in this self-directed simulation of life as a registered migration agent.
