Prescribing for Midwives (8034NRS)

This course has been designed specifically to meet the educational requirements for midwives who are seeking endorsement as prescribers. The course builds on the student's background as a registered midwife and prepares the student for practice as an autonomous prescriber in the Australian health care system. Students will develop skills in ascertaining the information that they require in order to generate a medication plan - including detailed knowledge of the pharmacology of specific drugs, relevant aspects of the clinical history and physical examination, and the use of clinical investigations to inform prescribing choices. Communication skills that are essential for effective prescribing will be developed and techniques for writing legal prescriptions will be mastered. Clinical examples are used throughout the course in order to help students apply their learning in their role as midwifery practitioners. Pre-requisite: Students must hold a current and unrestricted licence as a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
