Reading the Moving Image (1114GFS)

This course is an introduction to reading the moving image and academic research more generally. It includes an introduction to semiotics, scene composition, narrative structure, sound/image relations, colour theory and viewer psychology. Examples and teachings are drawn from animation and games, as well as cinema and television, so that it becomes apparent how forms and terms developed for one screen medium might apply to another. Screenings as well as readings are integral to the study undertaken. This course provides a grounding in media analysis skills and their practical application to conceptual productions in this course and for students to build on over the course of their degree.
