From 2021, commencing students are referred to the Bachelor of Psychological Science (1012).

About this program

You will learn how to apply psychological theories to topics such as thinking and perceiving, motivation, stress, health, criminal activity and group behaviour.

You will also learn how to evaluate and understand tests that measure intellectual, behavioural and emotional states. You will develop interpersonal and communication skills and learn about the principles of counselling and core areas of psychology. You will learn how to help people with personal, health, vocational and social difficulties.

You will have the opportunity to undertake a professional practice placement to enhance your skills.

Honours is available through an additional year of study.

The Bachelor of Psychological Science is offered full-time via blended mode at the Mount Gravatt campus. You would generally expect to commit 100 - 150 hours per trimester to study for each course you are enrolled in. This would involve attending scheduled (i.e. set timetabled) online lectures and on-campus small group active learning classes, as well as engaging in asynchronous (non-timetabled) online learning modules and independent study and assessment completion. Scheduled classes may be set during the day and evening throughout the week.

Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per trimester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

You will be prepared for a career in counselling, guidance, health management, social research, rehabilitation and other related fields including health and organisational workplaces.

As a graduate, you may also be eligible for entry into a wide range of postgraduate degrees in areas like social work, speech pathology, teacher preparation, rehabilitation counselling, forensic mental health, criminology and criminal justice. You will need to complete further study to work as a registered psychologist.

Professional recognition

As a Bachelor of Psychological Science graduate, you will be eligible for Affiliate Membership of the Australian Psychological Society. Further study is required to qualify for provisional registration as a Psychologist.

Pathways to further study

A range of study pathways is available to students who meet the specified requirements for admission. These include a one year Honours program in Psychology as well as postgraduate programs in Health, Business, Education and allied fields that range from six-month Graduate Certificates and one year Graduate Diplomas to two year Masters.

This is based on average study patterns across courses and the Australian Government's broad discipline areas (student contribution bands). A student's actual annual fee may vary in accordance with his or her choice of majors and electives. The Australian Government sets student contribution amounts on an annual basis.

  • International students who have been approved to pay domestic tuition fees after obtaining Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency or a permanent humanitarian visa and who have not obtained a Commonwealth supported place.

  • A fee-paying undergraduate student pays tuition fees.
  • Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date.
  • The tuition fee is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled.

FEE-HELP

Eligible undergraduate fee-paying students may defer their tuition fees by taking out a FEE-HELP loan which is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). Payment of the loan is via the taxation system when income reaches a specified level.
