About this program
Eligible students may apply for this Honours program up to and including Trimester 2-2024. From Trimester 1-2025, commencing students are referred to the Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours) (1658).
The Bachelor of Urban and Environmental Planning (Honours) program is designed to allow eligible student the opportunity to complete an independent research project under the supervision of an academic staff member. The honours course will include additional course work including advanced research strategies and methods. Honours students will complete the same course requirements as Pass degree students including a modified version of the off campus placement course.
The Honours program is a critical element for students seeking a direct pathway into research, academia and employment in many consulting and government organisations who prioritise the employment of honours graduates.

Attendance information
The Bachelor of Urban and Environmental Planning (Honours) is offered full-time on-campus at the Nathan and Gold Coast campuses.
As a full-time student you will generally attend 15-18 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the trimester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.
The program includes courses which may involve compulsory field work.
This program includes some optional courses which may be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9am and 5pm, and it is expected that if you enrol in these courses you will be available to attend.
In this program you are required to undertake unpaid work experience which requires part-time attendance at a planning office.
If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
Work-integrated learning
In this program students complete an approved work placement in a planning related role under the supervision of a qualified planner. Trainee planners will work not less than 217.5 hours (i.e. the equivalent of 30 working days of 7.25 working days each) in a planning office on a planning related project under the supervision of a suitably qualified professional and subject to the approval of the course convenor.

As an Honours graduate you will have the same career opportunities as a Pass degree graduate plus the evidence that you have been successful in completing an independent major research undertaking with limited supervision.
In addition, students seeking a direct pathway into a career in research or academia will be seriously advantaged with an Honours degree qualification, in fact it is a normal prerequisite for undertaking a higher degree by research. You should also be aware that many consulting and government organisations prioritise the employment of honours graduates.

Students completing their degree with Honours are eligible to proceed to a Higher Degree by Research (MPhil or PhD).
International students
An International student is one who is not:
- an Australian or New Zealand citizen or
- a Pacific Engagement visa holder or
- a person who has Australian permanent resident status.

- Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date.

- The tuition fee for students who commence their program from 2014 onwards is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled.

Changing programs
If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.
Permanent resident status
If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.
The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.
If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
