About this program

You will develop knowledge and skills to work as a dietitian and learn how to help improve the health of individuals and the community. You will learn through extensive hands-on experience in state-of-the-art facilities, including a purpose-built teaching kitchen and a nutrition clinic in the Griffith Health Centre.

You will develop skills in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry before you take advanced study in human nutrition. In the final phase of your degree, you will complete industry placements to put your skills into practice.

This program gives you the flexibility to advance your professional practice skills or to complete a dissertation in your final year of study.

Compulsory Trimester 3 Study

Students commencing in this program in Trimester 2 are required to complete core courses in Trimester 3.

Professional Placement

You must be available full-time to attend professional practice education placement activities in Years 3 and 4.

Managing Study Interruptions
Leave of Absence

Taking a leave of absence from this program is permitted, subject to conditions outlined in the Enrolment Procedure and receiving approval from the Program Director or their nominee.

Readmission

A student who has discontinued enrolment in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program and who is not on an approved leave of absence is required to seek approval for readmission to the program from the Program Director, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics or nominee. Readmission to the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program is not guaranteed and subject to availability of clinical placements

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning activities integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in the degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life. While there is work integrated learning throughout the degree, the major component occurs in the final year.

In this program, students will spend time in the work/professional environment undertaking placements at various locations. Placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan/Gold Coast area and (by negotiation) interstate or overseas.

Students undertake a minimum of 100 days (800 hours) of professional placement; 15 days (120 hours) in the third year of the program, with the remainder in the fourth year of the Program. All professional placements are under the supervision of a qualified dietitian with Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) credentials in a range of sectors including hospitals, residential aged care facilities, the community (government or non-government organisations) or private businesses.

You will be prepared for a career in the health industry as a dietitian/nutritionist in private and public hospitals, community health services, health promotion and public health units, private practice, health service management and food industries.

The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) is accredited by the Dietitians Australia.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible to become members of the Dietitians Australia and can apply to join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program.

There are placements associated with this program and before undertaking professional experience placements, all students in this program are required to have completed the following by the end of their first trimester of study:

An International student is one who is not:

Indicative annual tuition fee

The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters).

Changing programs

If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.

Permanent resident status

If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.

The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Fees and Charges Procedure.

If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.

If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
