About this program

You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in public health roles around the world. You will learn how to address major health issues including chronic disease, sexual health, nutrition, HIV/AIDs, physical activity, drugs and alcohol within many populations such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, youth, seniors and in settings such as workplaces, hospital and schools.

In the final year, you will put your academic studies into practice through professional placements in public health organisations. The placements can be in either local or international locations. Visit Health Placement Support Hub for details.

Honours is available through an additional year of study.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning activities (professional placements) integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. In this program you will spend time in the work/professional environment. Total work placement: 200 hours.

As a graduate you will be qualified to find work as a public health officer or a health promotion officer tackling our most pressing health issues. You could work on intervention programs or policies in teams at an international level with organisations such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations or UNICEF or with federal, state or local governments or at the community level. You will be prepared for a range of contemporary issues such as mental health, women's and men's health, epidemics and pandemics, alcohol and drugs, and child and adolescent health.

Professional recognition

Public health officers and health promotion officers are recognised as professions under the Health Practitioners and Dental Officers (Queensland Health) Award - State 2015.

Students and graduates are eligible for membership of the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA).

Professional Practice requirements

There are placements associated with this program and before undertaking professional experience placements, all students in this program are required to have completed the following by the end of their first trimester of study:

Pathways to further study

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Public Health (1440) with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or higher over the second and third year of the Bachelor degree will be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Health (Honours) in Public Health (2121). Further study options also include the Doctor of Medicine (5099), the Master of Public Health (5263), the Master of Global Public Health (5725) and the Master of Health Services Management (5586). Students interested in further study should consult the Program Director.

International students

An International student is one who is not:

  • an Australian or New Zealand citizen or
  • a Pacific Engagement visa holder or
  • a person who has Australian permanent resident status.
Indicative annual tuition fee

The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters).

Changing programs

If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.

Permanent resident status

If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.

The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.

If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.

If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
