About this program

The Bachelor of Applied Information Technology is a unique program with an emphasis on employability, entrepreneurship and experience.

This program provides you with core and relevant applied IT skills with a specific focus on getting you job-ready.

You will be given the opportunity to use your skills in a variety of work placement/work integrated learning roles that will provide you with exposure to actual IT companies.

You will have the choice of studying topics such as:

  • Programming
  • Robotics
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Data Management
  • App Development
  • Sensor Networks
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality

You can also choose one of two majors (IoT and Robotics or Programming for Visualisation and Entertainment) and select from a range of elective courses.

Throughout the program, you will grow your employability skills and develop entrepreneurial thinking through formal classes and substantial practical experiences. The series of practical projects for industry or research placement, completed in second and third year, provide first-hand experience of knowledge, skills and other capabilities required to succeed in full-time employment.

The program gets you to think entrepreneurially about how you can use your applied IT skills to maximise your potential with your employer or to even start-up your own business venture.

This degree program is offered full-time and part-time. Courses are offered in blended learning mode which range from fully online to, where access to specialised hardware is required, on-campus only. Courses are also offered in intensive mode in Trimester 3.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Work-integrated learning

Students must complete a 20 credit point Work Integrated Learning component in their third year.

This Work Integrated Learning component can be taken as either an Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) or a team-based Industry Project. IAP has been designed to integrate students into the workplace through the completion of an industry based project. It is designed to benefit both the student as well as the industry partner. IAP requires both an industry professional supervisor and an academic supervisor. The maximum workplace attendance requirement will be 2.5 days a week (20 hours) over 13 weeks (i.e. 260 hours). The Industry Project option for the Work Integrated Learning course requires students to analyse, design and propose an innovative solution to a computer-based information system or how to leverage technology for an existing problem within an organisation. The School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has ample projects for students to undertake.

The inclusion of work-integrated learning in this degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.

Core courses prepare students for careers in: computer security, IT support roles, software acquisition, software integration, software enhancement/maintenance and database support.

Those students who complete the Information Systems major will have additional opportunities in business analysis, IT management, Information Systems architecture design and project management.

Students who complete the Networks and Security major will have additional opportunities in network support, network design and network security support.

The Bachelor of Applied Information Technology is conditionally accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

Professional recognition

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible to apply to join the Australian Computer Society as full members.

Griffith University has accreditation from the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) and graduating Bachelor of Applied Information Technology students with the Information Systems major will have commenced their preparation for industry certification from the IIBA.

Those students graduating with the Networks and Security major will be ready to undertake industry network certification.

What are the fees?

Commonwealth supported students

  • The indicative fee represents the expected average fee for an annual full-time study load (80 credit points). This is based on average study patterns across courses and the Australian Government's broad discipline areas (student contribution bands). A student's actual annual fee may vary in accordance with his or her choice of majors and electives. The Australian Government sets student contribution amounts on an annual basis.

Fee-paying undergraduate (domestic) students

These fees are only applicable to domestic students who are not Commonwealth supported including:

  • Full-fee paying domestic students who commenced their program prior to 2009.
  • International students who have been approved to pay domestic tuition fees after obtaining Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency or a permanent humanitarian visa and who have not obtained a Commonwealth supported place.
Tuition fees
  • A fee-paying undergraduate student pays tuition fees.
  • Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date.
  • The tuition fee is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled.

FEE-HELP

Eligible undergraduate fee-paying students may defer their tuition fees by taking out a FEE-HELP loan which is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). Payment of the loan is via the taxation system when income reaches a specified level.
