This degree prepares students to teach in early childhood, primary or secondary settings. You will undertake a foundation first year, including a school classroom practical observation. You can then choose to pursue either primary or secondary education at the end of first year.
In line with our belief that education should be for everyone, you'll develop strategies and resources to prepare you to teach learners from diverse academic and personal backgrounds. Throughout your study, you will hone your curriculum planning skills, and build your confidence to design, deliver and evaluate lessons to ensure you graduate as an experienced and capable educator.
During your studies, you will undertake 80 days of supervised professional experience. We have a dedicated placement officer to assist in organising your placement.
Our primary education curriculum covers areas such as history and geography, the way language develops and works, mathematics, science and technology, health and physical education, and the arts.
You can also choose to specialise in early childhood education, health and physical education, special needs education, English, mathematics or science.
You'll learn the knowledge and skills to teach students through years 7 to 12 and can choose to undertake studies in two teaching areas, or one teaching area and the Learning Support major (conditions apply to some teaching area combinations). We offer a large range of secondary teaching areas, including:
If you don't meet the minimum ATAR/selection rank, you will automatically be considered for a place in the Diploma of Education/Bachelor of Education. This means you may receive an offer into the Bachelor of Education that is conditional upon successfully completing the Diploma of Education at Griffith University. Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Education, you'll be transferred into the second year of the Bachelor of Education.
Visit griffith.edu.au/undergraduate-diplomas for more information.
The Bachelor of Education is offered full-time on-campus, with options for flexible online study. It is a 4 year full-time program however it can be completed in 3.5 years full-time in an accelerated mode, which requires undertaking some courses in Trimester 3. Some courses in this program may not follow the standard academic calendar. After enrolling, check your timetable on myGriffith for course and professional experience requirements.
To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.
Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.
Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.
Please refer to the Australian Government website for more details.
Taking a leave of absence from this program is permitted, subject to conditions outlined in the Enrolment Procedure.
Students will undertake a minimum of 80 days of supervised professional practice: 37.50 hours/week, across 16 weeks for a total work component of 600 hours. Students undertaking the Early Childhood major in the Bachelor of Education will undertake 37.50 hours/week across 22 weeks for a total work component of 825 hours.
As a graduate, you'll be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.
