About this program

The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) provides academic and pedagogical foundations for professionals who are or will be involved in work that focuses on the learning and teaching of English as a second or foreign language. The degree provides a qualification in the teaching of English in a variety of contexts with a strong focus on teaching in the Asia-Pacific region.

The program content is internationalised and intercultural, focusing on the development of a knowledge base and analytical skills that will enable graduates to operate in a range of roles involving the need to understand how second and foreign languages are learned. The course includes an independent study component requiring the knowledge and application of research principles and practices relating to professional work or learning in TESOL.

Please note that this program does not lead to teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.

The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages offers a range of different durations depending on your previous studies:

You may be eligible to complete this program in 2 years full time, or part-time equivalent, if you have: 

  • Bachelor, any discipline

You may be eligible to complete this program in 1.5 years full time, or part-time equivalent (with 40 credit points of advanced standing) if you have: 

  • Bachelor, related discipline OR
  • Graduate Certificate, related discipline

You may be eligible to complete this program in 1 year full time, or part-time equivalent (with 80 credit points of advanced standing), if you have: 

  • Bachelor Honours, related discipline OR
  • Graduate Diploma, related discipline

Attendance information

The Master of TESOL is offered full-time, part-time and on-campus at Nathan. All courses are also offered online.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

This program has been approved by the Australian Government for student income support (for example, Youth Allowance and Austudy). Students should contact Centrelink for more information about their eligibility for student income support payments.

This postgraduate program has Commonwealth Supported Places. If you are eligible, the Australian Government will contribute to the cost of this program but you will also be required to make a contribution. Quotas are applied for admission to the Commonwealth Supported Places. Where demand exceeds the number of available places and all places have been filled for the current admission period, applicants who meet minimum program entry requirements may be eligible for a Fee-Paying Postgraduate place if such places are available. Please note that deferrals are not permitted for programs with Commonwealth Supported Places.
