About this program
Become a teacher in just three and half years
This program prepares students to teach in primary or secondary settings. Students undertake a foundation first year and then undertake studies in either primary or secondary education from Year 1/Trimester 3. Students undertake professional practice which includes observation and participation in schools, practice teaching and community field studies.
Foundation (First) Year:
All courses in the foundation year of the Bachelor of Education are offered across all three campuses (Gold Coast, Logan, Mt Gravatt) and online. Trimester 3 offerings of 1199EDN, 1399EDN, 1499EDN and 1599EDN are for students who commence in Trimester 2 and will be offered on the Gold Coast and Mt Gravatt campuses and online.
Primary Education (Gold Coast, Logan, Mt Gravatt and online*): Curriculum areas include history and geography, the way language develops and works, mathematics, science and technology, health and physical education, and the arts. Students studying Primary Education may also take a double major in either Health and Physical Education*; Special Needs Education; or Early Childhood Education; or select one of the available minors in English, Mathematics or Science. Core courses in the Primary Education Major are offered across all three campuses (Gold Coast, Logan, Mt Gravatt) and online. Students may need to travel to another campus to undertake courses specific to a particular double Major or Minor that are not offered on their home campus.
* Students electing to take the Primary/HPE double major should note that 4082EDN requires physical attendance at workshops at Griffith University Gold Coast campus and other locations on the Queensland Gold Coast. It is not possible to complete this particular course online.

Secondary Education (Gold Coast, Mt Gravatt): Students undertake studies in two teaching areas or one teaching area and one major (conditions apply to some teaching area combinations). Core education courses in the Secondary Education Major are offered on the Gold Coast and Mt Gravatt campuses or online. Teaching area content courses may be offered on-campus only and students should check the timetable for individual courses as to whether they can be completed online. Students may need to travel to another campus to undertake courses specific to a Secondary Teaching Area that are not offered on their home campus.

Students undertaking two Teaching Areas will select one area from the Teaching Area Content 1 list and one area from the Teaching Area Content 2 list. Selecting two teaching areas from the same list may lead to timetable clashes and may extend your program completion due to courses being offered once a year only.
Students undertaking the Learning Support major will select one area from the Teaching Area Content 2 list. Selecting the Learning Support major with a Teaching Area from the Teaching Area Content 1 list may lead to timetable clashes and may extend your program completion due to courses being offered once a year only.

Note: The Australian Federal Government has mandated that all students of initial teacher education programs demonstrate they have been assessed as being in the top 30% of the adult population for personal literacy and numeracy. The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is administered and managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). While this is not a requirement for admission, all students will need to organise and demonstrate a pass result in all components of the LANTITE prior to graduation.
Attendance information
The Bachelor of Education program is offered full-time on-campus.
The duration of this program (that is, 3.5 years full-time) is equivalent to a four year full-time program delivered in an accelerated mode which includes some Trimester 3 core courses. Trimester 3 is compulsory in order to meet the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Education.
Compulsory Tutorial Attendance for All Professional Experience Courses
In line with AITSL Professional Experience Roles and Responsibilities, Griffith University preservice teachers must reach an 80% threshold for tutorial attendance and active participation in the lead up to placement and follow on from placement for all Professional Experience courses. Students who cannot attend the full tutorial and thus cannot actively participate during the tutorial will not be able to proceed with the placement and/or complete the course. Students will be administratively withdrawn from the course and will need to contact "educationconnect@griffith.edu.au" to request a new program plan.
Please be aware that courses in this program may not follow the standard academic calendar. After you have completed your enrolment each trimester, please check your timetable on myGriffith for details of when classes commence and the duration of professional experience placements.
If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
Work-integrated learning
Students will undertake 80 days of supervised professional practice. Work component is 37.50 hours/week, across 16 weeks. Total work component is 600 hours. Students undertaking the Early Childhood major in the Bachelor of Education have a work component of 37.50 hours/week across 22 weeks. Total work component is 825 hours.
My career opportunities
As a graduate, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. The Early Childhood Major is recognised by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority.
You may find work as a teacher in the independent, Catholic and state education systems in Queensland, as well as overseas, many of which can lead to senior positions, such as a head of department or principal.
Rather than teaching in schools, you could choose to follow a different pathway and you may find work at: training settings in industry and government, outdoor education, adult literacy, libraries, educational research, education policy, or consultancy.
Students wishing to seek teacher registration in another state should seek advice from that state's appropriate professional body.

Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
Information for placements within Queensland
Before undertaking professional experience placements, all students in this program are required to:
- undergo the Working with Children Check and
- be issued with a Blue Card.
Students must hold a current valid Blue Card throughout the duration of each professional experience. Students may be asked to present their Blue Card to facility staff on the first day of each placement and should keep their Blue Card on them at all times while attending a professional experience placement.
The University is legally obliged to warn students that it is an offence for a disqualified person to submit a Blue Card application. Further information may be obtained from Queensland Government Blue Card Services, the Education Professional Experience Office or from any Griffith Student Centre.
Blue Card applications must be submitted online by the student via the Queensland Government Blue Card Services website. There is no fee for a student Blue Card.
International students
An International student is one who is not:
- an Australian or New Zealand citizen or
- a person who has Australian permanent resident status.
Indicative annual tuition fee
The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters).

Changing programs
If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.
Permanent resident status
If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.
The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.
If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
