To be eligible for the award of Master of Dentistry (MDent), a student must acquire 160 credit points as prescribed below:

  • gain 20 credit points for Year 1 foundation research courses;
  • gain 60 credit points for Year 1 clinical courses;
  • gain 10 credit points for the Year 2 research project;
  • gain 70 credit points for Year 2 clinical courses;
  • successfully complete all courses in a year before proceeding to the following year;
  • complete professional experience, clinical experience/placement and other mandatory requirements (courses or components of courses incorporating clinical experience or other mandatory components need to be satisfactorily completed to satisfy degree requirements even though the overall performance would otherwise qualify the student to graduate).

Clinical experience
Students will be expected to undertake clinical work and placements in dental clinics external to Griffith University. Since clinical work will involve children, students will require a Queensland Government 'Blue Card'. There are additional requirements for clinical experience and placements. Students should contact the School of Medicine and Dentistry for further information. This clinical experience is critical to completion of the program and registration as a Dentist and should be perceived by students as mandatory.

This degree may be awarded with Distinction where a student achieves a minimum program GPA of 6.5 with no failed courses. The words "This award was achieved with Distinction" will be recorded on the testamur.

Designated courses for the purposes of exclusion

All clinical courses within the program are designated for the purposes of the Academic Standing, Progression and Exclusion Policy. A student who fails a designated course will be subject to review by the Health Assessment Board and may be excluded from the program. The Dean and Head of School will carefully monitor any instances of exclusion. The designated courses are as follows:
