To be eligible for the award of Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology (PhDClinPsych), a candidate must acquire 420 credit points as prescribed below:

  • gain 280 credit points for the research component;
  • gain 80 credit points for the coursework component;
  • gain 60 credit points for the practicum component.

All components of the program are compulsory and must be completed in accordance with the following progress requirements for the program:

  • the research component will be assessed by an examination of the research;
  • to satisfactorily complete the coursework, a student must pass each individual piece of assessment;
  • to pass the practicum work, a student must pass Practicum 1-4.

Progress review requirements

Completion of progress reporting requirements is a condition of continued candidature for higher degree research programs. The following progress review requirements must be completed for the Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology program:

  • completion of the Early Candidature Milestone within 6 months (equivalent full-time) of commencement
  • completion of the Confirmation of Candidature Milestone within 1 year (equivalent full-time) of commencement
  • completion of the Thesis and Candidature Review Milestone within 3 years of commencement for full-time and part-time candidates
  • completion of a progress report in years where a milestone is not completed.

Designated courses for the purposes of exclusion

The courses listed below are designated for the purposes of the Academic Standing, Progression and Exclusion Policy. A student who fails a designated course will be subject to review by the Health Assessment Board and may be excluded from the program.

Note: The Psychology Board of Australia is concerned with the protection of the public and, therefore, if a student fails a practicum unit, they may (with approval of the Program Director) repeat a practicum unit. A second fail of a practicum unit will result in being excluded from the program and this may result in a change to the eligibility to continue as a registered Psychologist in Australia.
