About this program

In this integrated vertical degree, you'll gain a thorough grounding in the application of clinical, development, biological, cognitive, social, and organisational psychology. You'll then build on this broad knowledge base with studies in the growing specialist area of mental health practice. You'll learn the latest evidence-based research and specialised knowledge about health services for people with mental illness. You'll collaborate with consumers, carers, and mental health professionals in your studies so that you're prepared for a profession in various settings where mental health knowledge is essential.

When undertaking the Master of Mental Health Practice, students will be able to complete either a Dissertation stream or Practice stream. Students completing the Dissertation stream will complete a research dissertation on an area of interest in the mental health field. This will provide students with the knowledge and skills for conducting independent research projects and the research experience necessary for those who wish to pursue a PhD or Master of Philosophy. For those students not interested in research, the Practice stream which includes coursework only may be preferred. All students will commence in the Practice stream. Students wishing to complete the Dissertation stream can transfer to that stream when all eligibility criteria have been successfully met.

Attendance information

The Bachelor of Psychological Science courses are delivered via blended mode at the Gold Coast, Mount Gravatt campuses and Master of Mental Health Practice courses are delivered online. Students who wish to undertake the optional course 7048HSV Professional Practice should note the on-site attendance requirements. You would generally expect to commit 100 - 150 hours per trimester to study for each course you are enrolled in. This would involve attending scheduled (i.e. set timetabled) online lectures and on-campus small group active learning classes, as well as engaging in asynchronous (non-timetabled) online learning modules and independent study and assessment completion. Scheduled classes may be set during the day and evening throughout the week.

Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per trimester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

Student Income Support

Student Income Support is only available to students studying full time in the Bachelor of Psychological Science component (first three years of the program).

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Please refer to the Australian Government website for more details.

Please note: The Master of Mental Health Practice (final year of the program) is not eligible for student income support.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning activities (professional placements) integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in the degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.

Students may choose to complete work-integrated learning in 7048HSV Professional Practice (which has on-site attendance requirements), but it is not compulsory.

My career opportunities
