About this program

Preparing you to teach with confidence

This degree prepares students to teach in early childhood, primary or secondary settings. You will undertake a foundation first year, including a school classroom practical observation in either primary or secondary. You can then choose to pursue either primary or secondary education at the end of first year.

In line with our belief that education should be for everyone, you¿ll develop strategies and resources to prepare you to teach learners from diverse academic and personal backgrounds. Throughout your study, you will hone your curriculum planning skills, and build your confidence to design, execute and evaluate lessons to ensure you graduate as an experienced and capable educator.

During your studies, you will undertake 80 days of supervised placement to develop professional experience. We also have a dedicated placement officer to assist in organising your placement.

Primary

Our primary education curriculum covers areas such as history and geography, the way language develops and works, mathematics, science and technology, health and physical education, and the arts.

You can also choose to specialise in early childhood education, health and physical education or special needs education, or complement your studies with english, mathematics or science.

Secondary

You¿ll learn the knowledge and skills to teach students through years 7 to 12. Choose two teaching areas or one area and a major in learning support. We offer a large range of secondary teaching areas, including:

  • biology
  • English
  • digital technologies
  • food and nutrition
  • geography
  • history
  • mathematics
  • visual arts
  • chemistry
  • design technology
  • drama
  • health and physical education
  • physics
  • psychology.

Bridging Maths

You must have the maths subject prerequisite to undertake primary education study. If you don¿t have this qualification yet, we offer a Bridging Maths course that meets the requirement. Most students who complete this course start studying their degree in the next available trimester.

Diploma pathway

If you don't meet the minimum ATAR/selection rank, you will automatically be considered for a place in the Diploma of Education/Bachelor of Education. This means you may receive an offer into the Bachelor of Education that is conditional on successful completion of the Diploma of Education at Griffith University. Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Education, you¿ll be transferred into the second year of the Bachelor of Education.

Visit griffith.edu.au/undergraduate-diplomas for more information.

Scholarships

Take advantage of both Griffith University and government scholarships offering a range of benefits¿financial support, mentoring, internships and permanent employment opportunities.

Scholarships of up to $40,000 for the Bachelor of Education and $20,000 for the Master of Primary Teaching or Master of Secondary Teaching are available through the¿Australian Government Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program for domestic students. There is also a wide variety of other scholarships available for you while you study.

Lantite

Prior to graduation, students also need to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE), managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Griffith University pays for the initial attempt for each component by preservice teachers who are currently enrolled in an initial education program at Griffith University. Consult the ACER website for information about LANTITE testing restrictions and booking information at¿https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au.

Attendance information

The Bachelor of Education program is offered full-time on-campus.

The duration of this program (that is, 3.5 years full-time) is equivalent to a four year full-time program delivered in an accelerated mode which includes some Trimester 3 core courses. Trimester 3 is compulsory in order to meet the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Education.

Please be aware that courses in this program may not follow the standard academic calendar. After you have completed your enrolment each trimester, please check your timetable on myGriffith for details of when classes commence and the duration of professional experience placements.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Please refer to the Australian Government website for more details.

Work-integrated learning

Students will undertake 80 days of supervised professional practice. Work component is 37.50 hours/week, across 16 weeks. Total work component is 600 hours. Students undertaking the Early Childhood major in the Bachelor of Education have a work component of 37.50 hours/week across 22 weeks. Total work component is 825 hours.

My career opportunities

As a graduate, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. The Early Childhood Major is recognised by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority.

You may find work as a teacher in the independent, Catholic and state education systems in Queensland, as well as overseas, many of which can lead to senior positions, such as a head of department or principal.

Rather than teaching in schools, you could choose to follow a different pathway and you may find work at: training settings in industry and government, outdoor education, adult literacy, libraries, educational research, education policy, or consultancy.

Students wishing to seek teacher registration in another state should seek advice from that state's appropriate professional body.

Program accreditation

The Bachelor of Education is accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

Professional recognition

The Early Childhood Major is recognised by the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACEQA).

Professional Practice requirements

In line with AITSL Professional Experience Roles and Responsibilities, Griffith University preservice teachers must reach an 80% threshold for tutorial attendance and active participation in the lead up to placement and follow on from placement for all Professional Experience courses. Students who cannot attend the full tutorial and thus cannot actively participate during the tutorial will not be able to proceed with the placement and/or complete the course. Students will be administratively withdrawn from the course and will need to contact "educationconnect@griffith.edu.au" to request a new program plan.

Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
